Dunedin City Council debated flying Palestinian flag on 29 Nov. 2023

A Notice of Motion was put forward by DCC Councillor Marie Laufiso calling for the Palestinian flag to be flown from Civic buildings on 29 November, the United Nations international day of solidarity with the Palestinian people. This created a debate on Tuesday 28 November where people were invited to make public submissions before the Dunedin City Council. There were submissions for and against the motion. This is one of seven submissions:

Compromise Reached

As a result of the debate, the DCC decided they would fly the New Zealand flag at half-mast from civic buildings in respect of all the innocent victims of the Israel-Gaza war, both Israelis and Palestinians. This was a very reasonable compromise on a very polarized and divisive issue.
